It Worked For Me

It Worked for Me is a collection of lessons and anecdotes that have shaped four-star general and former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s career in public service. At its heart are Powell’s “13 Rules”—notes he accumulated on his desk that are now the basis for his leadership presentations throughout the world. Powell’s short-but-sweet rules—such as “Get mad, then get over it” and “Share credit”—are illuminated by personal stories that expand on his principles for effective leadership: conviction, hard work, and above all, respect for others. Summing up his remarkably positive outlook, Powell simply writes, “It can be done.”

Bound to inspire, move, and surprise, It Worked For Me offers a fresh and original blueprint for leadership.

This book offers some great, proven guidelines for leaders in any position, military or civilian. I wish the first chapter of this book had existed when I went through my various NCO schools as a young Non-Com. We did have great leadership principles taught to us then, but the form in which General Powell presents them in Chapter One is simple, clear cut, and easily applied to life's situations. This is a great read, and I recommend it for anyone in any Leadership position, especially those just starting out as leaders.

Will it work for others?

A very easy read. Very practical rules that have shaped America in past. Optamism prevails but I'm not so sure.
