The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Landmarks

America is home to some to some of the world’s great landmarks, from outstanding examples of architecture to engineering marvels to natural wonders. In The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Landmarks, Thomas W. Paradis presents 150 of these sites, all which have been selected from The National Landmark Register, which lists sites deemed to have national historic significance or symbolic importance.

The collection includes buildings and structures (Rockefeller Center); places of military history and conflict (the Alamo), recreation grounds and public spaces (Central Park); buildings of notable construction and engineering technology (St. Louis’ Gateway Arch) and also notable historic districts (the Bodie Historic District in Mono County, California).

Each landmark is described in detail and is set within a geographical chapter with an introduction that captures the character of the area. An overview of every landmark describes its history, methods of construction and development, architectural considerations and associations with culturally important events or well-known people.

Illustrated with 500 stunning photographs, here is a splendid overview of America’s most significant places.

This is a Gem
April 30, 2012

This book is a gem. The illustrations are just beautiful. I bought it for a gift for my brother's 60th birthday in June and I can't wait to give it to him. Loads of information about special places. It is a delight to read this exceptional book.
