Presidential Pets

Throughout America’s history, the presidential menagerie has included an array of creatures both big and small, ordinary and absurd. This inside look at the White House’s animal residents features a rollicking, rhyming verse for each commander-in-chief’s set of pets, accompanied by cool facts, presidential stats and laugh-out-loud cartoon art. The story begins with George Washington’s hounds: The dogs behaved badly on a boat ride home, so Washington’s friend left them at the harbor alone! But the pet-owning winner of all the presidents was outdoorsman Theodore Roosevelt, who had a hyena, lion, zebra, badger, snake, rats and more. Kids of all ages will have a great time with this fascinating journey through presidential history!

Fun little history lesson
January 04, 2013

This was an interesting little book. I thought it'd be cool to learn about the different animals that have lived in the White House, but truth be told, there is more information on the presidents themselves than their pets. However it lists out what kinds of pets each president had and gives basic information on the presidents. There was a lot I didn't know/learned, so that was good! The illustrations were wacky and interesting (though the Bill Clinton one I definitely raised my eyebrow at because it looked nothing like him). A fun historical read!
