The companion volume to Ken Burns' epic documentary film, The War offers a searing look at the wartime lives of more than 40 ordinary Americans during the Second World War. Featuring 450 stunning and evocative illustrations, many of them in magnificent full color, and all taken from the film, The War shows WWII from the vantage point of those who did the fighting and the dying. Closely following the inhabitants of four classic American towns—Luverne, Minnesota; Sacramento, California; Waterbury, Connecticut; and Mobile, Alabama—The War chronicles, in Ken Burns' memorable words, not “the traditional top-down heroes,” but rather “men whose stories of war are just now being told.” Employing the same remarkable documentary format they made famous in Jazz, Baseball and The Civil War, Burns and longtime collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward have crafted an utterly compelling new masterpiece, revealing the tragedies and triumphs of what they call this “necessary war.” Featuring superb writing, haunting and unforgettable images, well-selected documentary excerpts, and much else besides, this magnificent volume brings to life as never before the wrenching and inspiring story of America's greatest generation.

I purchased the audio version of this book, but have not yet read the written to see if it varies any from the book. However, the audio version was narrated by Ken Burns, and Tom Hanks - to name just a few. This was a very awe-inspiring recording. I was very impressed with the amount of research and work that went into this book. It is a very vivid account of the time-line told from a Soldier's perspective, during World War II. I would recommend this book to anyone. Very excellent work.

The Audio Version stated that the Japanese objective was Adak, Alaska... (and later, Guam,... with a larger goal of conquering Hawaii)... but that never happened, due to the battle of Midway, as well as several other turning decision points. In my opinion, the audio version is not flawed. (but then again, I haven't read the book to compare.)

Flawed scholarship. For example, they maintain the Japanese occupied Adak, Alaska in the Aleutians. Not true. Attu and Kiska were occupied. The Japanese never set foot on Adak.

I have not even finished this book yet and I think it is great. I am 26 so to understand that time period is hard for me. This book really helps me know what it was like to live during WWII. I would recommend this book to anyone who has even the slighest interest in WWII. I have not seen the documentary yet but I am sure it is just as good as the book!
