Standing with Stones

The catch phrase emblazoned on merchandise available at Europe’s most famous prehistoric monument reads, “Stonehenge rocks!” Indeed it does, but there’s much more to Britain’s megalithic past than this iconic site, with literally thousands of other stone monuments of the Neolithic and Bronze Age strewn throughout the land. Rupert Soskin’s Standing with Stones is a richly illustrated guide to over one hundred of these monuments, from such famous sites as Stonehenge and Newgrange to lesser-known ones like Fernworthy and Bleasdale.

Standing With Stones offers ample technical details about these sites. But, as Soskin shows us, there are many ways to see them. While modern archaeology focuses on their dates of construction, and how they were built, it’s just as important to consider their visual qualities—and the book’s specially commissioned photography showcases these beautifully. By reflecting on the aesthetics of these monuments, Soskin suggests, we can think more widely about their meanings, as well as how they were perceived during their time.

Remarkable in its scope and breathtaking in its beauty, Standing With Stones is a fitting tribute to Britain’s most enduring structures.

The pictures are absolutely beautiful!! What a lovely book to have and share. We can spend hours looking at these pictures and reading all about these wonderful ancient stone structures. From these accounts, our forefathers and mothers were much more advanced than we've been led to believe....whatever the reason for them being built, each one is fascinating!!

I love this book! The photography is breath-taking. I could sit and pour over the pictures forever. My dad's from Ireland, and one of my favorite things to do when we visit is to look up these old sites. I'm always looking for ones I haven't been to yet and this book provides lots of them! I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's for anyone interested in the history of ancient Britain and Ireland.

No Kidding, It's Just Breathtaking

The pictures are wonderful! The book is chockablock with magnificent photographs, one or more on almost every page. The book is worth the purchase price for the pictures alone, but the text gives you real food for thought as well. I always considered these sites as tombs, but you will have to read the book and judge for yourself as to what they may have been intended to be. It certainly got me thinking.
