World Heritage Sites

In 1959, the government of Egypt decided to build the Aswan High Dam, which would flood a valley containing a wealth of treasures of ancient civilizations. In response, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched a safeguarding campaign, which led to the list of World Heritage Sites. The first book that fully describes every official site designated by UNESCO, World Heritage Sites takes us on a tour of 878 of the planet’s most beautiful, historically relevant and awe-inspiring places. Covering 141 countries, the World Heritage list’s strict criteria ensure that only the world’s most extraordinary sites make it on to the list. While well-known choices include the Acropolis, Egypt’s Pyramid Fields, Vatican City and Everglades National Park in Florida, the book is filled with surprises, ranging from the beautiful (Everglades National Park) to the somber (the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp). Presented in gorgeous photographs and informative text, with a handy timeline at the top of each page indicating the date the site was designated and location maps, World Heritage Sites pays spectacular tribute to the best the world has to offer.

So Many Sites, Just One Lifetime?!
November 09, 2009

As a couple who likes to learn while we travel, this book is a vault full of where-next ideas for my wife and me. The photography is occasionally "stock-ish," but mainly stunning. This hefty volume powerfully shows how many amazing places there are in the world--and how many life-enriching spots are still far out our our priority charts for the next several years. For those compiling "bucket lists," or simply to wish away an afternoon, this sizeable book is worth lifting off the coffee table. Our copy is already festooned with mini-Post-Its for future plans.
