The Illustrated Bible: Story by Story is an accessible, engaging presentation of the stories that have shaped Western culture for centuries. Authenticated by a multi-denominational, multi-national team of biblical scholars and historians, this large-format book traces the people, events and places that have shaped the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, prophet by prophet, miracle by miracle, enabling readers to enjoy and understand the Bible as never before.
The introductory chapter traces the development of the Bible, succinctly setting a social, historical and geographical backdrop for the momentous stories to follow. Color photographs of sites and artifacts bring the ancient world to vivid life.
The stories are then retold on full-page spreads, whose exquisite color layouts feature stunning print quality and attention to detail. Magazine-style sidebars and bullet-pointed lists provide supplementary information without disrupting the flow of the narrative. Four alternating types of spreads—story, biography, key moment and context—make navigation simple and clear:
* Story spreads feature simple synopses and explanatory text. Even if you’ve heard these stories many times, you’ll be captivated by the concise, exciting retellings. Throughout, biblical citations make cross-referencing easy.
* The biography spreads profile key figures, from Adam and Eve to John the Baptist to Saint Paul. Timeless works of art—portraits, sculptures and biblical scenes—accompany the text.
* Key-moment spreads focus on pivotal scenes, outlining their broader significance in biblical and historic terms. Comprehensive timelines give an instant overview of events, while before-and-after panels link events over time.
* Context spreads explore key themes. Supported by references to archaeological discoveries and historical documents, these spreads provide detail on the Bible’s cultural and historical underpinnings.
Biblical quotations in each spread provide a direct link to the source. Also, maps and landscape photographs make important sites, such as Jericho and Mount Sinai, intensely real to the reader.
The book concludes with a handy, at-a-glance reference section presenting an overview of the protagonists and key locations, helping readers navigate their way around the Bible’s books, chapters and verses. The unique, attention-grabbing design makes this colorful book an enriching reading experience on its own, as well as an informative companion to Bible readings. Comprehensive coverage of every major covenant, prophecy and parable in the Old and New Testaments, set in their historical and religious context, will appeal to the general reader, regardless of faith. Thus, this book is an ideal gift and an essential resource.
