The doomed tsar
In March 1917, Nicholas II, the last Tsar of All the Russias, abdicated and the dynasty that had ruled an empire for three hundred years was forced from power by revolution. On the hundredth anniversary of that revolution, eminent historian Robert Service reveals Nicholas's life and thought, from the months before his abdication to his bloody death, with his family, in July 1918.
Drawing on untapped sources-including the Tsar's diaries and recorded conversations, as well as the official inquiry-Service sheds new light on his troubled reign, showing him to be a man almost entirely out of his depth. It is also a compelling account of the social, economic, and political firestorm that engulfed Russia and set her on the road to communism.
"Service's book is the best work yet on Nicholas after his abdication....[brings] not just vast knowledge but also a deep commitment to balanced judgment, intellectual rigour and honesty, and accessible writing."-Financial Times
"[A] timely and important book...The story that he makes of [the Romanovs] may be familiar, but he brings to it rare clarity and common sense. His book is a fast-paced account of the last 16 months of the tsar's life; brief, sharp, but laced with well-judged feeling for the dramas of the time."-The Guardian
"The Last of the Tsars is an intriguing analysis of the complex relationship between a dying monarchy, a revolutionary government, and a quest for absolute power. The book also confirms Service as one of the greatest authorities on 20th-century Russian history in the English-speaking world today."-Independent.ie
