The force within
As the 19th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, General Norton A. Schwartz witnessed the most momentous military and foreign policy decisions of modern times. In this uncensored account, Schwartz recounts his personal and professional battles, from Iraq to the Pentagon, Afghanistan to the halls of Congress.
Schwartz chronicles a remarkable 40-year career that culminated in his rise to the pinnacle of the USAF. Along the way, he chronicles the evolution of U.S. spec ops, cyber warfare technology, the demise of Bin Laden, and his greatest legacy: the dramatic escalation of the “drone” program. But Journey is ultimately a book about leadership: of a man who flew high and proud through the uncharted airspace of America’s modern military.
“The day that I became Chief I pledged to restore America’s trust in the U.S. Air Force, and I understood that the only way to do so would be to return to the high standards of precision and reliability that were rightfully expected of us. Institutions would have to be reinvigorated, performance refocused and the standards reinforced—all worthwhile pursuits, but only achievable through rigorous accountability, a theme that I’ve always held near and dear.”
